"In a future where the human population almost died out because of a virus destroying all of the earth's plant life, scientists and researchers saved the planet by changing humans, or enhancing them, into something more, something special. This process is known as Going Green due to the physical changes involved and is considered to be the ultimate goal - to go green, join the upper echelons of Sci-City, and devote your life to technology and development. For those who cannot afford to have the enhancement procedure, a tougher future lies ahead, where they are ridiculed and deemed as drones, or worse they may join the rebel forces who fight against Sci-City and all that it stands for.
Calyssa Brentwood has waited for the day that her eyes would change colour and the changing process would begin. Finally, she is going to be green and maybe now she will fit in with her father and sister. Maybe now she will feel more comfortable in her own skin. But when a mix-up over spring break finds Calyssa staying out of the city with Ana and her brother Gabe Stayton, life will never be the same for her again. At the farm where everything is done the old way before technology took over, Calyssa begins to find a peace that she never thought possible, and witnessing the love that flourishes in the Stayton home, she cannot help but feel envious of their closeness. But as danger enters their countryside idyll, Calyssa begins to realise that maybe her entire life has been a lie - what if those in power in Sci-City are not as honest as they appear? What if the rebels have genuine reasons to stand together and fight? And as her independence and confidence grow, Calyssa cannot help the feelings that are growing for Gabe, who is so much more than a drone. But with a powerful father and a deeper, darker, threat on the horizon, will Calyssa be brave enough to take a chance and risk it all? GOING GREEN by Heather S. Ransom is a gripping and addictive dystopian novel that hooked me instantly and kept me riveted to the very last page. With characters that are so much more than what they initially appear to be and a unique and engaging plot, GOING GREEN is a Young Adult novel like no other. The pace is perfect, and the scientific elements of the story fascinating, and I really cannot wait for more from Calyssa and Sci-City. An excellent read!" BOOK RATING - 5++++++ |
